2. Composition/Information on Ingredients

CAS Number: 26762-29-8

Name: 2,5–Furandione, Telomer with Ethenylbenzene, and (1–Methyl ethyl) benzene

Typical%: >98

Common Name: Styrene Maleic Anhdride Copolymer

TSCA Inventory Status: The ingredients of this product are on the TSCA inventory list.

The substance is identified as a hazardous chemical under the criteria of the OHSA Hazard Communication Standard (29 cfr 1910.1200)

3. Hazards Identification

Overview: Material is an off-white flake having a slight styrenic odor.

Warning! May form explosive dust—air mixtures. Improper transfer may cause electrostatic spark. Processing releases vapors or fumes, which may cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation.

Potential Health Effects

Inhalation and skin contact are expected to be the primary routes of occupational exposure to cumene Telomer with styrene and maleic anhydride. Workplace experience with this material is limited. No toxicological information on the health effects of this or similar materials was found in a search of the scientific or chemical usage literature.

4. First Aid Measures

Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with a directed stream of water. Forcibly hold eyelids apart to ensure complete irrigation of all eye and lid tissue. Get Medical Attention.

Skin: Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Immediately flush the area with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes if exposure is excessive and material is on clothing. Get Medical Attention.

Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention immediately.

Ingestion: Induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Get medical attention.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Flash Point (test method): N/A
Auto-Ignition Temperature: N/A

Flammable Limits:
Upper: Not Available
Lower: Not Available

Extinguishing Media:
Water spray, carbon dioxide, foam, or dry chemical.

Fire Fighting Procedures:
Do not use a solid stream of water. May cause dust explosion. Fire fighters should wear self contained air supply (NIOSH approved). Equipment should be thoroughly decontaminated after use.

Fire and Explosion Hazards:
Dust clouds generated during handling and/or storage can form explosive mixtures with the air.

For any processing operation involving this resin, use only CLASS II electrical equipment. Ensure that all equipment is adequately grounded.

As with any dry material, pouring CM 308 or RC 1040 resin or allowing it to free-fall or to be conveyed through chutes or pipes can accumulate and generate electrostatic sparks, potentially causing ignition of the material itself, or of any flammable materials, which may come in contact with the generated sparks. Take proper precautions when transferring CM 308 or RC 1040 resin, including grounding all equipment, providing an inert atmosphere, and properly designing material handling equipment, to prevent electrostatic charge formation.

6. Accidental Release Measures

If a spill or leak occurs:
Sweep and remove materials. Put in a suitable container. Flush the spill area with water.

7. Handling and Storage

Handling:

  • Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing.
  • Wash thoroughly after handling.
  • Avoid breathing dust and processing vapors.
  • Process using adequate ventilation.
  • Keep container closed.

Storage:

  • Avoid dispersion of dust into air to reduce the potential explosion hazard.
  • Eliminate potential ignition sources. Conveying and processing equipment should be spark proof, bonded, and grounded to prevent any static charge buildup. Maintain good housekeeping standards to prevent accumulation of dust.

Refer to NFPA pamphlet #654, m: “Prevention of fire and dust explosion in the chemical, dye, pharmaceutical, and plastics industry.”

Always keep powder dry and away from strong acids and oxidizing agents.

8. Exposure Controls and Personal Protection

Engineering Controls:

  • Investigate engineering techniques to reduce exposures.
  • Provide ventilation if necessary to minimize exposure. If practical, use local mechanical exhaust ventilation at sources of air contamination such as open process equipment. Consult ACGIH ventilation manual of NFPA standard 91 for design for exhaust systems.

Eye Protection:
Where eye contact may be likely, wear chemical goggles and have eye flushing equipment available.

Skin Protection:

  • Wear appropriate chemical resistant protective clothing and chemical resistant gloves to prevent skin contact.
  • Consult glove manufacturer to determine appropriate type glove material for given application.
  • Rinse contaminated skin promptly.
  • Wash contaminated and clean protective equipment before reuse.
  • Wash skin thoroughly after handling.

Respiratory Protection:

  • Avoid breathing dust.
  • Use NIOSH approved respiratory protection equipment appropriate to the material and/or its components a full face piece is recommended where airborne exposure is likely.
  • If exposures cannot be kept at a minimum with engineering controls, consult respirator manufacturer to determine appropriate type equipment for application.
  • Observe respirator use limitations specified by NIOSH or the manufacturer.
  • For emergency and other conditions where there maybe a potential for significant exposure, use an approved full face positive-pressure airline with auxiliary self-contained air supply.
  • Respiratory protection programs must comply with 29 CRF 1910.134.

13. Disposal Considerations

Recover, reclaim, or recycle when practical.

Disposal via incineration is recommended. Appropriate pretreatment and disposal in authorized landfills is acceptable. In all cases, dispose of material in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Consult appropriate regulatory officials or your attorney for information on such disposal.

Note: Chemical addictions to, processing of, or otherwise altering this material may make this waste management information incomplete, inaccurate, or otherwise inappropriate. Furthermore, state and local waste disposal requirements may be more restrictive or otherwise different from federal laws and regulations.

Container Hazardous When Empty. Empty container retains product residue. FOLLOW LABELED WARNINGS EVEN AFTER CONTAINER IS EMPTIED. RESIDUAL DUSTS MAY EXPLODE ON IGNITION. DO NOT CUT, DRILL, GRIND, OR WELD ON OR NEAR THIS CONTAINER. Improper disposal or reuse of this container may be dangerous and/or illegal.
